£1,500 Motorhome Fine Overturned | Europe Travel Lesson

In late 2024, a UK couple crossed from Calais to the UK in their motorhome and later found a young stowaway zipped inside the bike-rack cover on the rear of the van. They reported it to the police immediately, assuming that was that.

Except it wasn’t that.

Over Christmas 2024, while travelling abroad, a £1,500 Home Office penalty arrived for failing to check for a clandestine entrant, even though the stowaway was found in externally mounted equipment, not the living area.

The story made headlines nationwide. A YouGov poll showed 81% of 4,600+ adults felt the fine was unfair.

By March 2025, the fine was cancelled and reduced to £0 by Border Force.

The ending we all hoped for.

The real lesson for 2026? Motorhomes get noticed in ways owners never plan for. If you’re crossing into Europe or back to the UK, make checking external fittings, racks and covers part of your routine. Not because every journey hides a headline, but because the unexpected is now part of the owner’s checklist too.
